He currently writes two different columns on competition for the journals Pharmaceutical Executive and Pharmaceutical Executive Global Digest. Dr. Bernard previously worked at Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Company where he held six different executive business and medical positions. He was U.S. Product Manager for the launch of the cholesterol-lowering drug Pravachol, the first Bristol-Myers Squibb pharmaceutical product ever to exceed $100 million in any worldwide market in its first year of sales. He served as U.S. Managed Care Medical Director, the first person to hold such a position in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Bernard was U.S. Director-Pharmacoeconomics, where he initiated and directed Bristol-Myers Squibb’s health/disease management initiatives. He co-initiated and helped direct the Medical Services Managers Program, the first doctor-only field based sales force in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry. He directed U.S. Medical Affairs for BMS’s infectious disease products and worked in Worldwide Licensing and Business Development.

Prior to joining Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dr. Bernard served as a Consulting Principal in the Pharmaceutical Industry Practice at A.T. Kearney. He worked at Mediq, Inc. as a Senior Health Care Consultant to hospital systems and physician group practices. For over a decade, Dr. Bernard served as an Expert Consultant to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
For 14 years (1991-2005), Dr. Bernard was a Senior Fellow in the Healthcare Systems Department at The Wharton School of Business where he initiated and lectured in the “Pharmaceutical Management” MBA course. He also initiated and lectured in the “Healthcare Information Technology” MBA course for five years. From 1994-97, he was an Adjunct Professor at the Vanderbilt Owen School of Management where he lectured on Pharmaceutical Management. Dr. Bernard has conducted numerous presentations at executive business forums, national medical societies, governmental agencies, and academic institutions, including the Stanford School of Business, Columbia Business School, Harvard Medical School, and the Northwestern University Kellogg Business School.

Dr. Bernard has won numerous awards for his work. In 2006, he was the first independent management consultant ever to be recognized for PharmaVoice Magazine’s “100 Most Inspiring People in the Pharmaceutical Industry.” In 2000, Dr. Bernard received the prestigious “Wharton School of Business Health Care Alumni Achievement Award” for contributions to the health care industry and to the Wharton School of Business Health Care Management MBA Program. He also received the “A.T. Kearney Global Intellectual Capital Recognition Award,” the highest individual honor awarded to an A.T. Kearney consultant worldwide in 1997.
Dr. Bernard was the founder and first Editor-in-Chief of Disease Management, the official journal of the Disease Management Association of America. Dr. Bernard has served on the boards of numerous companies, organizations, and journals, including Pharmaceutical Executive magazine, Morristown Medical Center (NJ), the Metro Chapter of the Healthcare Business Women’s (HBA) Association, and the Dorothy B. Hersh Foundation, which provides grants to help special needs and handicapped children in New Jersey.
Dr. Bernard received his M.B.A. in marketing and health care management from the Wharton School of Business. He received his Medical Degree from Baylor College of Medicine and is a licensed general practitioner. He received his B.A. in biology (with a concentration in genetics) from the University of Pennsylvania and completed additional coursework at Edinburgh University in Scotland.
